Book launching of Muktijuddher Chikishsha Itihas held in the capital

Authors shed light on the unknown side of the Liberation War

Staff Reporter, Dhaka : The book launching ceremony of a new book Muktijuddher Chikishsha Itihas, authored jointly by renowned fiction writer and medical anthropologist Shahaduz Zaman and public health expert Dr. Khairul Islam, and published by Prothoma Prokashon, was held at the experimental hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

Many people were injured, killed and disabled during the war. How these people were treated is an inevitable part of the war. The authors have shed light on many unknown chapters of treatment services that were offered in 1971 through extensive research in this book. This book contains the history of how ordinary people, including doctors, nurses and village doctors were involved in the medical war institutionally and informally within Bangladesh, beyond the border and in the refugee camps of India during the liberation war.

A number of dignitaries including famous freedom fighters and medical personnel participated in the unveiling ceremony. Shahaduz Zaman and Dr. Khairul Islam elaborated the context of their research, data collection experience and the relevance of this book in the history of Bangladesh at the event.

Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, Freedom Fighter, Founder, Trustee Board Member, Gonoshasthaya Kendra; Padma Rahman, Freedom Fighter, Military Nurse, Bangladesh Hospital; Dr. Abul Bashar Mohammed Khurshid Alam, Director General, Directorate General of Health Services of Bangladesh, and editor of Prothom Alo Matiur Rahman, Dr. Kazi Tamanna also delivered speeches at the event.

The book will be available at the physical and online stores of Prothoma Prokashon. The price of the book is BDT 650.

About the authors:
Shahaduz Zaman is a medical anthropologist and currently a Professor at University of Sussex, UK. Shahaduz Zaman is an acclaimed writer with over 30 published books to his name, including short stories, novels, travelogues, columns, and essays on contemporary issues. He also won the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2016.

Md. Khairul Islam is one of the leading public health and development professionals of Bangladesh. He is currently working as the regional director of WaterAid, South Asia. He graduated in medicine from Sir Salimullah Medical College and completed postgraduate from NIPSOM and Boston. He is the editorial member and contributor of the book Bangladesher Shahstho Khather Bikash published by Prothoma Prokashon. He is a contributor of Oxford University published book Shashtho Khather Durniti and Shashtho Khath in Mujibpedia.
