Press Release: Tuesday, July 21, 2026: The government has declared that the finalization, approval and formulation of a comprehensive ‘Road Safety Law’ by December 2027 in light of the Safe System Approach and international best practices. At the same time, Bangladesh has reiterated its international commitment to reduce the number of deaths and injuries in road accidents by 50 percent by 2030.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam made the announcement while leading the Bangladesh delegation at the UN High-Level Meeting on Improvement of Global Road Safety held at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday local time.

The minister said that in addition to formulating the road safety law, the government will formulate a speed management manual and helmet usage implementation guidelines by 2026.

He also said that the government is considering road safety as a national political priority. Strong political will, effective partnerships and collective responsibility of all stakeholders are essential to achieve the 2030 goals. He also expressed his determination to work closely with the international community to build a safe, sustainable and inclusive road system.

Other members of the Bangladesh delegation at the meeting included Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Department Dr. Mohammad Ziaul Haque, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Project Director of the Bangladesh Road Safety Project Mohammad Shabbir Hasan Khan and Director of the Health and Nutrition Sector of Dhaka Ahsania Mission Iqbal Masud.

The delegation is being supported by the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) and Road Safety Coalition Bangladesh (RSCB).

Meanwhile, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam will co-chair a side event titled ‘Strengthening Multisectoral Coordination for Road Safety: Sharing Best Practices and Experiences from Countries Successfully Reducing Road Traffic Casualties and Injuries’ to be held at the UN Headquarters on Tuesday.
