Staff Reporter, Dhaka : To build awareness of lead pollution in Bangladesh, the youth came together to observe International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (ILPPW) on October 30, 2023. The focus of this year’s campaign is “End Childhood Lead Poisoning” which reminds governments, civil society, organizations, health partners, industry and others of the risks of lead exposure and the need for action to protect children’s health.
Environment and Social Development Organization – ESDO organized a human chain and rally in collaboration with Director General of Health Services (DGHS), icddr’b, IPEN, Nippon Paint and UNICEF. Volunteers from Lalmatia Housing Society School and College shout out to ban lead paint and lead based products in Bangladesh. The rally started at Lamatia Housing Society School and College and eventually covered the whole Lalmatia area.
Lead exposure poses a significant threat to public health, particularly for children, and it is vital to address this issue with utmost urgency. The event showcased a spirit of unity and determination among the youth and partners who stand united against lead poisoning.
The youths demanded a complete ban on lead-based paint production in the country along with the proper management of used lead acid batteries (ULAB) and establishing a mandatory standard for lead in toys. The youth of Bangladesh, through the rally, demonstrated their commitment to public health and their determination to create a lead-free environment for all. By taking a united stand, youths sent a strong message that “lead poisoning is unacceptable and can be prevented with collective action.”
