Staff Reporter, Dhaka : The members of BRAC Bank’s four Reading Cafés recently engaged in a month-long discussion on eminent author Shawkat Osman’s classic novel Kritodasher Hashi. This marks the first time all four book clubs read and analyzed the
same literary work, fostering a shared intellectual experience among the members.
BRAC Bank proudly nurtures a culture of reading through its four book clubs, known as Reading Cafés, located at its two head offices – Anik Tower and Sepal Tower – and in Chattogram and Chuadanga districts. These vibrant literary forums allow coworker to engage in deep discussions on literature, history, and socio-political themes.
During the discussions, members explored Shawkat Osman's life and literary style, examining how he conceived and crafted Kritodasher Hashi. A lively debate emerged on whether the book should be classified as a novel or a play, adding another layer of
analytical engagement.
The novel portrays an autocrat who cannot smile or laugh, while one of his slaves can. When the ruler frees the slave but takes away the source of his happiness, the slave ceases to smile – even in the face of severe punishment and death. This powerful allegory sparked discussions on its historical context, particularly its connection to
Pakistan’s autocratic rule in Bangladesh.
BRAC Bank’s Reading Cafés continue reinforcing a culture of intellectual curiosity and literary appreciation among its coworkers, enriching their perspectives beyond the workplace. Encouraging reading is part of BRAC Bank’s commitment to holistic coworker development, fostering critical thinking and insightful discourse.
Members of the Reading Café at Anik Tower have begun reading Afsan Chowdhury’s novel Bishwashghatokgon, promising another round of engaging discussions in the coming weeks.
