Staff Reporter, Dhaka : In a nation where professional boxing is a fresh venture, Sura Krishna Chakma has molded it into concrete form with an incredible journey. Through relentless commitment, resilience, and self-confidence, he shattered barriers and proved that dreams can turn into reality if one believes in themselves. Garnering attention among sports enthusiasts, Sura demonstrated that aspirations have no boundaries, eventually becoming Bangladesh’s first professional boxer!

The story of Sura began in a small community where the odds were stacked against him. Growing up in his paternal house in Rangamati, he has an affinity towards sports, especially football. He also loved martial arts while growing up and watched movies on karate – Bruce Lee, Jet Lee, and more. After his father’s demise, he was sent to the BKSP for both a good education and sports training. Unable to qualify in the football trial at BKSP due to his height, Sura later focused on boxing. Back then, boxing was not popular; societal influences tried to encourage him to change his mind. However, Sura’s unwavering determination allowed him to chart his course toward greatness, ignoring all odds. Upon receiving training from the BKSP from 2007 to 2013, he joined the National Boxing Team in 2014.

Initially, Sura faced a lot of challenges, like limited resources and poor training facilities, mainly because boxing was very unpopular. He transformed his limitations into stepping stones, with a makeshift gym and relentless self-discipline to hone his skills. Sura’s early morning runs and tireless practice sessions became a testament to his passion for boxing.

All the hard work led Sura to win his first medal in 2009; it was silver. In 2011, Sura played at the senior level for the first time and beat a boxer from Bangladesh Army in the Victory Day event. Then in 2013, Bangladesh Games was held, where Sura played for Bangladesh Railway and won gold for the first time at the senior level. Consequently, Sura was called up to the national team for the first time (2014), where he trained for six months under Ukrainian coach Alexander Guriyenko. Afterward, he went to Scotland for the Commonwealth Games.

After a long and illustrious amateur boxing career with many medals and achievements, he thought of moving to professional boxing. Under the title ‘Xcel presents South Asian Pro Boxing Fight Night – The Ultimate Glory,’ last year Bangladesh Boxing Foundation held the first of its kind tournament in Bangladesh at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium with a total of 14 boxers from Bangladesh, India, and Nepal taking part in the competition. Sura, who participated in professional boxing competitions twice in India in 2018, defeated Nepal’s champion Mahendra Bahadur Chand in the lightweight category! Experts opine that Sura’s next stop should be the MMA! For news on the MMA, and inspiring sports stories or sports news round-up, please visit Parimatch News.

As the first Professional Boxer in the country, Sura Krishna Chakma’s dream is to build a sports training academy in Rangamati town. Here, children from all over Rangamati can come and receive sports training. Sura comes from an ethnic community and stays very true to his roots. Representing the country and the indigenous people inspires him to move forward. Sura Krishna Chakma strongly believes that martial arts can be a great way to empower the ethnic minorities in Bangladesh. Minorities are naturally gifted sportspersons. When given the opportunity, they can also shine on the global stage, just like himself.

The inspiring journey of Sura Krishna Chakma changed the landscape of boxing in Bangladesh. Sura’s story empowers many youths to defy the odds and keep pursuing their goals relentlessly.
